Spring is in the air, and if you’re like most of us at Venetia Landscape Supply, your hands are probably itching to get back into the dirt. But before you start planting those begonias, let’s talk about the unsung hero of the garden: Mulch.
Think of mulch as a high-end spa treatment for your soil. It regulates temperature, suppresses those pesky weeds, and locks in moisture so you aren’t standing outside with a hose every five minutes. However, choosing the right “flavor” for your landscape matters.
Here is the breakdown of our specialized inventory and where each type shines best.
The “Fresh Paint” Look: Dyed Mulches
If you want your curb appeal to stay “fresh” all season long, dyed mulch is your best friend. We offer two main styles: Double Shredded Bark for a refined look and Chipped Wood for maximum longevity.
Refined & Fine: Double Shredded Hardwood Bark
These options feature a finer consistency that looks manicured and elegant in formal flower beds.
- Dyed Chocolate: A rich cherry brown finish.
- Dyed Red: A warm, vibrant red finish.
- Dyed Walnut: A sophisticated dark brown finish.
- Dyed Black: A deep, “midnight black” finish that makes green foliage pop.
Durable & Vibrant: Chipped Recycled Wood
If you’re looking for longer color retention or a mulch that stands up to the elements without breaking down quickly, these are your go-to options:
- Dyed Brown or Black Chips: Chipped recycled mixed hardwood designed for longer color retention.
- Dyed Brown Pallet: Chipped recycled wood pallets with a cherry brown finish. This is the ultimate “low maintenance” choice—it offers the longest color retention and will not decompose, making it perfect for areas where you don’t want to re-mulch every year.
The Natural Beauty: Non-Dyed Mulches
For those who prefer a traditional look or have specific functional needs, our non-dyed options are local favorites.
- Premium Double: This is a double-shredded hardwood oak mulch. It starts with a natural medium brown color and gracefully transitions to a beautiful teak coloring over time. It’s the “classic” choice for a reason.
- Playmat: These natural light brown wood chips are clean and functional. While they look great, they are specifically processed for safety and utility. They are our top recommendation for playgrounds or even chicken coops.
Which Mulch is Right for You?
- Dyed Bark (Chocolate, Red, Walnut, & Black):
- Texture: Finer, double-shredded consistency for a manicured look.
- Longevity: High color retention throughout the season.
- Best Use: Formal garden beds and front-yard curb appeal.
- Dyed Chips (Brown & Black):
- Texture: Chipped recycled mixed hardwood.
- Longevity: Very high; these chips hold their color longer than bark.
- Best Use: High-traffic walkways or windy areas where heavier mulch is needed.
- Dyed Brown Pallet:
- Texture: Chipped recycled wood pallets with a cherry brown finish.
- Longevity: Permanent color; this mulch will not decompose.
- Best Use: Areas where you want a “set-it-and-forget-it” solution and don’t want to worry about soil enrichment.
- Premium Double Oak:
- Texture: Natural, double-shredded hardwood.
- Longevity: Natural aging; transitions from medium brown to a beautiful teak color.
- Best Use: Traditional landscaping and garden beds where natural decomposition and soil health are priorities.
- Playmat Mulch:
- Texture: Uniform, natural light brown wood chips.
- Longevity: Medium; stays clean and functional for several seasons.
- Best Use: Playgrounds, under swing sets, or inside chicken coops.
How much do you actually need?
A common mistake is going too thin (which lets weeds through) or too thick (which can suffocate your plants). We generally recommend a depth of 2 to 3 inches for garden beds. For safety in play areas using Playmat mulch, you’ll want to go significantly deeper.
Friendly Reminder: Avoid “mulch volcanoes!” Don’t pile mulch directly against the trunk of your trees. This traps moisture against the bark and can lead to rot and insect issues. Keep the “flare” of the tree visible.
