In the Pittsburgh Area, May is the official month of the “Mulch Spread.” We see the trucks lining up and the wheelbarrows hitting the driveways. But while most homeowners choose their mulch based on how it makes their red tulips pop, the real value of mulch happens beneath the surface.
- Moisture Retention: As we move into the hotter days of June and July, the Pennsylvania sun can bake the moisture right out of your soil. A thick layer (2-3 inches) of triple-shredded mulch acts as an insulator, keeping the roots of your expensive annuals and perennials cool and hydrated.
- Weed Suppression: Weeds need sunlight to germinate. By blocking that light with a quality mulch, you’re stopping the problem before it starts. This means less time on your hands and knees in the July humidity.
- Choosing Your Aesthetic: We offer Black Dyed (modern, high-contrast), Brown Dyed (classic, natural), and Natural Triple-Shredded (best for adding nutrients back into the soil).
Venetia Supply Tip: Never “volcano mulch” around your trees (piling it up against the trunk). This can lead to rot and disease. Keep the mulch a few inches away from the bark!
