Spring vs. Fall — When Should You Mulch?

It’s one of the most common questions we get here at Venetia Landscape Supply: “Is it better to mulch now, or should I have done this months ago?”

The truth is, both Spring and Fall have their perks. Choosing the right time depends on whether you’re trying to win the “Yard of the Month” award or just trying to keep your prize roses from freezing.

Here is the breakdown of the Spring vs. Fall mulch showdown.

The Spring Sensation: Curb Appeal & Weed Defense

For most homeowners, Spring is the “Traditional” mulching season. Once the snow melts and the tulips peek out, the mulch bags start flying off our shelves.

  • The Goal: Weed suppression and moisture retention.
  • Why it works: Spreading a fresh layer of Double Shredded Hardwood or Dyed Mulch in late April or May creates a barrier that smothers weed seeds before they can germinate. It also locks in moisture before the summer heat hits.
  • The “Pro” Tip: Don’t jump the gun! If you mulch too early while the ground is still frozen or soaking wet, you can actually trap the cold and moisture in the soil, which might delay your perennials from waking up. Wait until the soil has warmed up a bit.

The Fall Fortress: Winter Protection & Soil Prep

While less common, Fall mulching is the “secret weapon” of professional gardeners.

  • The Goal: Insulation and soil health.
  • Why it works: Think of Fall mulch as a cozy winter blanket. A fresh layer of Premium Double Oak or Natural Chips protects the root systems of your plants from the “freeze-thaw” cycle that can push bulbs and shallow-rooted plants right out of the ground.
  • The “Pro” Tip: As the mulch sits through the winter, it slowly begins to decompose, feeding the soil so it’s nutrient-rich and ready to go the moment Spring arrives. Plus, your yard will look tidy even when the flowers are gone.

The Comparison: Which Season Wins?

  • Best for Weed Control: Spring. (Stops them before they start).
  • Best for Plant Health: Fall. (Regulates soil temperature during winter).
  • Best for Aesthetics: Spring. (Fresh color for the outdoor entertaining season).
  • Best for Saving Time: Fall. (One less chore to do during the busy Spring planting rush).

If you only have the time (or budget) to mulch once a year, Late Spring is usually the winner for most homeowners because it maximizes weed control and keeps the yard looking sharp for summer BBQs.

However, if you have a lot of “tender” plants or newly planted trees, a Late Fall application can be the difference between a thriving garden and a dead one come March.

*Regardless of the season, never exceed a 3-inch depth. Your soil needs to breathe!
