Spring is in the air, and while many are reaching for the mulch bags, the savviest homeowners and contractors at Venetia Landscape Supply are looking at something a bit more permanent.
If mulch is the “high-end spa treatment” for your soil, think of stone and gravel as the skeletal system of your landscape. It provides the structure, handles the drainage, and—unlike mulch—it doesn’t need a refresh every season.
Whether you’re fighting a muddy driveway, building a retaining wall, or looking for a “set-it-and-forget-it” decorative border, here is the breakdown of our stone and rock inventory.
The Structural Heavy-Lifters: Limestone
Limestone is the backbone of most Pittsburgh construction projects. It’s functional, affordable, and essential for stability.
- 2A “Modified” Limestone: The undisputed heavyweight champion of bases. Because it’s a mix of 2B stone and limestone dust, it packs down incredibly tight. This is your go-to for wall foundations and driveway bases.
- 2B Limestone (The “57’s”): These are ¾” clean stones. Because there is no “dust” to clog things up, this is the gold standard for drainage. If you’re backfilling a retaining wall or installing a French drain, you want 2B.
- #3 Limestone (1”–3”): The “Mud Buster.” If you have a driveway that turns into a swamp every spring, a layer of #3 provides a heavy base that won’t disappear into the mud.
- 1B Limestone (The “Chips”): Also known as #8s, these small ¼”–½” stones are excellent for small driveway top-coats or as a sleek, modern base for pavers.
- 1A Dust: Fine and powdery. This is commonly used as a specialized base for horse stalls or to create a perfectly level “bed” for wall blocks.
The Showstoppers: Decorative River Rock
When the goal is aesthetics rather than just structural support, River Rock offers a smooth, natural look that mimics a dry creek bed.
- Pea Gravel (3/8”): Small, smooth, and easy on the feet. This is a favorite for under play sets or for creating charming, walkable garden paths.
- 2B River Rock (¾”): The most versatile decorative stone. It’s large enough to stay in place during a heavy rain but small enough to look refined in a flower bed.
- #3 & Large Mixed River Rock: Ranging from 1” to 8”, these larger stones are perfect for “hard-to-mow” slopes or for creating dramatic dry creek beds that handle serious water runoff.
The Accent Pieces: Specialty Stone & Boulders
Want your yard to stand out from the neighbors? Look toward our specialty colors and “anchors.”
- Red Rock (“Barn Rock”): This ¾” stone offers a warm, rustic red hue created through a natural oxidation process. It’s a great way to add “heat” to a landscape design without the maintenance of dyed mulch.
- Black Granite (3”): For a modern, high-end look, Black Granite offers a sophisticated medium-to-dark grey palette. It looks stunning when wet and provides a stark, beautiful contrast to bright green foliage.
- Mountain Boulders: The “anchors” of the garden. Sold by the pallet, these vary in size and are used to create focal points, natural steps, or to break up the visual “flatness” of a large yard.
How much do you actually need?
Unlike mulch, stone is heavy and stays where you put it. For most decorative applications, a depth of 2 to 3 inches is perfect. If you’re building a structural base for a driveway or wall, you’ll likely need 4 to 6 inches of compacted material.
Friendly Reminder: Always use a heavy-duty landscape fabric under your decorative stone. It prevents the rocks from “sinking” into the Pennsylvania clay and keeps your stones looking clean and professional for years to come.
